Floral motifs have always carried huge appeal, and they will continue to bloom big in 2022, with a renewed focus on nature, our environment and life. Short of actually placing flowers throughout your home, here are three simple ways to apply this hot trend to your home.
Wallcoverings have experienced a huge comeback in recent years, and I’m not referring to your Grandma’s wallpaper, either. Advances in printing techniques have allowed for vibrant colors and exciting patterns applied to silk, grass cloth, cork and more, in repeating micro patterns to large-scale prints. Bonus: many modern wallcoverings come pre-pasted for easy application, and they’re removable for when you’re ready to change things up.
Create a feature wall in your home with wallpaper or another type of wall covering. A floral feature wall is a great addition to the dining room, bedroom or bathroom, defining the space and drawing the eye through to the back of the room, making the space appear larger.
TIP: When decorating with wallpaper, choose the paper first and pull out its color palette to decorate the rest of the space. This takes the guesswork out of the color selection process. For example, your wallpaper should reflect your color choices for the remaining walls, furniture and accents.
Much like wallpaper, your textiles are a great place to channel your inner flower power. There’s no shortage of ready-made area rugs, upholstery, pillows and throws and window coverings featuring florals, but if you don’t find what you’re looking for in a showroom or online, it’s not a huge expense to have an existing piece re-upholstered or custom-made with your specific selection.
Mix and match your patterns using the 60-30-10 rule. If this rule sounds familiar, it should. These are the proportions designers and stylists use for color principal color, 30 percent for your secondary and 10 percent for your accent. The same applied to using patterns. Choose three – 60 percent for your more subtle patterns, 30 percent for your medium-sized motifs and 10 percent for the large-scale patterns.
When it comes to trendy trends (for lack of a better term) I always recommend not going all in. By this, I mean not spending a fortune or a huge effort on something you may want to change in a year or two. Floral motifs have been trending for a long time, but they have evolved over the years, so this rule applies if you like to change things up from time to time. Art is a great way to incorporate a trendy theme or color, without the commitment or cost. Purchase a few framed floral prints or canvases, or have a section of fabulous floral wallpaper framed and mounted, as a sort of pseudo feature wall. This gives you the impact without the obligation.
Of course, you can always incorporate actual flowers into your home when they’re in season, but with these tips, you don’t have to wait until spring to get your flower fix!
